A year ago I awoke one morning to find that I had lost 75% of the hearing in my right ear I had severe hyperacusis in both ears and increased tinnitus in both ears.  Two days previously I had watched the film Bohemian Rhapsody in the cinema and the noise was extremely loud, whether or not that brought about my problems I don't know.

After extensive tests with ENT specialists including an MRI and a couple of appointments with a psychiatrist due to the inevitable depression my symptoms remain the same and have probably worsened. A month ago I began to experience dizzy spells and a certain loss of balance.

However, my question to the forum is this:-

To protect myself from the noisiest of environments I occasionally use noise cancelling headphones or ear plugs.  (I'm fully aware of the arguments against using these aids but I would not be able to function under certain circumstances without them).  Just lately when inserting the plug into my deaf ear I get an intense pain which brings on a wave of dizziness so I have to leave it half in and half out of my ear, the left one is not affected. I can also bring on this feeling if I push my little finger into my ear.

Does anybody else suffer from this problem?  Or does anybody have a theory?

Regards,

Fred

p.s. I might add that after 5 visits to an acupuncturist recently I felt extremely relaxed and my anxieties and tinnitus had definitely lessened.  I did not see any improvements in my hyperacusis. Due to the shut down I cannot continue with the acupuncturist unfortunately.

I am having the same problem in my left ear when I insert the ear plug.  My left ear has a large build up of ear wax that I have put off removing. I am wondering if the ear plug is pushing against the hard wax causing the problem.

Hi phacker,

Thank you for your reply. You could be right with your suggestion that ear wax is causing the problem. I hadn't considered that as my ears were clear a couple of months ago when they were checked.

I hope you are right, if so it can easily be remedied.

May I ask why you are putting off removal of your ear wax?

Fred

I have put off removing the ear wax because the H sensitivity increases after removal.

Commiserations.  I am going to presume that you are correct that my ear is blocked with wax so I have started putting warmed olive oil drops in today in the hope that it helps.  There's no chance of getting to see a nurse or ENT specialist at the moment due to the lock down.

Many thanks for your help

My sure when they remove the earwax they do so manually, and NOT with washing it out with water or sucking it out.  Insist on this, and leave if they will not do so.  Flushing the ear is bad for hyperacusis.

Thank you for your advice. At the moment I am softening the ear wax with olive oil and when the lock down ends I shall visit the ENT doctor to discuss removal taking into account your comments.
