I have a cheaper pair of generic noisecancelling headphones, which are ok (still squeeze my ears and hurt them) but after the past several days of intense (Level 4) hyperacusis, I'm wondering if it would be worth it to purchase the Bose set?  If the Bose set is that much better, even just wearing without music?  I don't want to spend $300 but if they are far superior, I'm willing at this point for the relief.

God help me - this is HELL.  I'm so sorry for people that are suffering from this so intensely - I had no idea.

The Bose are very comfortable. They are actually noise-canceling, rather than merely physical noise protection. They work well for lower, steady sounds, like the droning of engines. They do let higher and more sudden sounds through, so they are not a magic solution. But they are a great help.

I only wear those others for ear protection when mowing or vacuuming. The ear protectors are very uncomfortable.

Thanks - do you know if they are better than the cheaper versions for noise cancelling?  The cheaper set does an ok job and I paid about $60 for them. They are fairly comfortable, though, with some protection but as you stated, don't block a lot of things.  They also hurt my ears just because they press on my glasses.

I'm beside myself on this, given how bad this has gotten in the last week......
