I thought I would let the folks on the network know that on 17 June I am having a single cochlear implant here in the UK.  I have been told by the consultant/surgeon that it  should at least relieve a lot of the hyperacusis problem, but only on one side of course.  I will let Network members know what the result is as the information might be useful.  However, it will take some weeks before I will be able to say for sure how the implant is functioning and whether indeed the hyperacusis has improved.  Best wishes.

Hello Lorraine

I read your post.  I know you mentioned that it may be weeks after the implant to know whether it was successful/helped the hyperacusis.

I just wanted you to know I was thinking about you and wishing you all the best in your recovery.

Hi Linda

Thanks very much for your best wishes.  It is only four weeks since the surgery so I am still recovering really.  The op itself was not that bad but it is quite a large wound and unfortunately the anaesthetic  and post-operative meds made me really ill due to a stomach condition I have.  Caused a bad flare-up which I am still getting over.  However, I now have the implant which was 'switched on' this week.  It takes quite a while for everything to heal and settle down and for the brain to re-learn the electronically generated sounds it is receiving, but the hearing on the operated side is massively improved already.  Whether the hyperacusis is going to be improved I am not sure yet.  I did notice a bit of a difference this morning when the washing machine went into spin mode because I normally have to leave the room; I wasn't quite as bad as that today so maybe?..... I will put up other messages when a bit more time has gone by.  Best wishes to you.  Lorraine
