Hello everyone, I am brand new here so please be a bit patient with me if I ask something that has been answered too many times. For about the last year or so I have been having problems with my left ear. It all started when someone was banging at my window to get me to open the door, and the rest was history. I currently have a low hum of tinnitus in my left ear that never goes away, but whats even worse than that is whenever I speak to someone in my regular voice or if someone speaks to me I get a whistling high frequency noise that accompanies the voice. This also happens to me when I am just listening to TV or even low music. This is really depressing to me and I am really starting to lose my desire to live. Whenever I can get back to work I will make an appointment to a Dr. but I don't know when that will be. I have read through some of the things discussed here and I knew if anyone knew about the whistling noise that it would be you guys. Thank you all.

Hi Carolina-

This sounds like plain old tinnitus that likes to compete with audio input at your ears.  When I first got it in '84, I would have similiar problems.  At times, it still does like to try to "outdo" what I hear.  It is possible and normal in many cases to have multi tone tinnitus.  I have so many different tones and kinds, I doubt Anne Howell at Callier's or anyone could hit my auditory moving target to fit wngs.

Hope the Dr. is a good knowledgeable ent.  A good otoneurologist or neurotolgist might help you on this too.

There are more folks here that can give better replies, but I didn't want you to wait to get one, so I chimed in.  Probably didn't help any, but at least I tried.

Wishing you better days ahead.

no! you certainly have helped bartony. I really do appreciate you giving me your input because I really did not know whether that whistle was tinnitus or not. I hope to get to a qualified physician asap because the whistling when I hear noises is worst to me then the constant ringing. I can barely even hear my natural voice anymore from my left ear. Thank you form the response bartony, it means a lot to me.

I sometimes get a feedback effect which has been going away steadily over a year now. It sounds to me that maybe you have an aversion to a particular frequency. When my wife speaks to me in her very high voice,I get a spike in my tinnitus. It seems to blend in with her voice. It is stressful and I havent had a normal conversation with her for over a year. I had Hyperacusis that now reduced to a bad case of Misophonia. Speaking to females is intolerable to my ears.

I have one more question for you kind folks. When I try to sleep, or take a nap I get this sound in both of my ears that sounds like a bumble bee. It also sounds like it is in my head at times. The sound is not constant but is very persistent and I only notice it when I try to sleep. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am trying to get things together where I can go to a Dr. here by the end o April. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You're not bothering a soul!  You're doing fine.

I would say this is tinnitus, Carolina.  Mine goes crazy and resets during sleep.  Just be glad you don't also have stapedial thumps like I do during sleep or being in bed.  I have the "bonus pack" of assorted sound effects.  But I would say that's what it is for you, just the tinnitus coming up in volume during sleep.  As a Dr. in AZ said the other day, sleep can modulate tinnitus.

Thanks, Carolina.  Sadly, I do get the kind of variety not much can be done about.  I'm trying Vit. B now, but this a.m., I got thumped awake at 5a.m.
You're mighty welcome for the help, what little I could give.
God bless you too.

Well, I went to the Dr. today and he ran a test that showed I had significant hearing loss in my left ear. I am now very depressed about this. Does anyone know what would be the right steps for me to take from this point? Thank you all for all of your help.
