little things you could do to help yourself:
1)use plastic knifes and forks- if you get some decent ones that work it is so much better than silver-wear!!
2) carry round ear-plugs in your bag or back pocket for comfort (don't always wear them) just know that they are there
3) listen to relaxation tapes and if you can't find a good one my doctor gave me one at the hospital so I'm sure yours would do the same
4) take yourself out of unnecessary situations- if it's too loud&uncomfortable then you should not have to endure that pain if nothing good comes out of it
5) remember that the loud noises that you think will damage you ears won't- the pain is unreal- but remember no damage should occur to your actual ears from this, only your head
6) always have some water and tissues in your school bag or work bag incase you have a panic attack so you can calm down a bit
if anyone has any more please post them!!

Best advice of all.  Easier said than done, but nevertheless do-able.  Recovery cannot start without that reckoning with the powerful physiological (not psychological) anxiety that is driven by the internal Limbic system that talks to the auditory nerve and reacts on you before you've even pulled your boots on.
