I've never found anywhere I could go and talk about this before(I am almost 38 years old). I never heard the word "hyperacusis" until about 1/2 hour ago. I was diagnosed with severe ADHD, and I think I don't even have it, and I have severe magnesium deficinecy related hyperacusis(severe muscle pain/fibromyalgia symptoms and light and sound sensitivity for year). In any case, my life has been on many occasions completely run by this phenemenon. I have just burned my nerves out and left gatherings or movies, or events early, or just had to turn all background noise off or I couldn't hear what people were saying in front of me. I felt I had no way of tuning noise out. And now I have tinnitus too.  And I felt so different from those around me. So thanks for being here and sharing your stories, I will read so many of them!

Hi Laura and welcome - I was just wondering how you treat your magnesium deficiency?  I use a transdermal spray - you spray it directly on your skin and it soaks in - this is a more efficient way of your body assimilating it - doesn't have to go via the digestive system where other factors may cause problems with it being used to its full potential.  You may already use it?

I haven't found and don't know I'd be able to afford transdermal spray? My friend paid 40 bucks for a bottle and doesn't use it. It would be preferable maybe for me with stomach issues too. I take citrate, in pretty high doses.

I also take it primarily for major muscle pain/tension, and believe I've been deficient for many years. I am finally able to have consistant relief from muscle problems.

H Laura - would your friend let you have their bottle? maybe for half price?  I get mine through Dr Mercola website - are you familiar with him?  http://www.mercola.com
It is only $9.97 per bottle http://products.mercola.com/magnesium-oil/
Not sure where you are but I am in Australia and I find his products cheaper even when I have to pay freight. I also have confidence in what he promotes.
Magnesium Citrate is the next best way to have it.

Sorry, I don't buy off the net at all. Maybe books only.
Never medications. If I could find it in the states I'd consider buying it off of a shelf.

Hi Lou, (((( Smiles ))))

A spray thats interesting. I have been useing magnesium for years now and when my daughter seemed to have loose stools and may be more sensitive to it.....
I switched to Magnesium Gel a topic of magnesium ordered over the phone by Dr Beckers BioNutrients. It's great for the skin too and has worked well.
I've replaced lots of other skin care products that I have used over the years with it.
I've learned so much over the years like others have as well about the chemicals, heavy metals and other additives that can be found in certain products and about quality.

Hi  Laura Light, I agree with Lou as well that it is a more efficient way of your body assimilating it, expecially if it effects your stomach or causes loose stools.
Good for constipation though but better for lots of others, magnesium gels and sprays.
BioNutients has sales here and there of 50 percent off and free shipping and handleing and I've got my Magnesium gel for less then ten dollars at times. For a six ounce tube. 50 percent of 13.95 is 7.00 and then I stock up on it...

For a sunburn I've put it in the refridge and when it's cold it not only cools the burn it also helps it get better as my daughter spends lot of time in the pool.
My other daughter has had acne teenage problems and it has helped it get better and smooth out when I apply it.
Others that have used it say also it seems to really work and it does, I have found.
I also take the chelated magnesium too 19.95 and at 50 percent off it's 10.00 then I stock up. Yesterday olive leaf was buy one get one free but I got too busy and forgot to phone..
But another big sale will happen again and then I will be ready for it.

Someday I will list all the channels he's on and the times.
Lots of people stand by him and he has other physicians on all the time.
I've learned so much from him and try to make changes in my life.
But I used magnesium also when I had this spastic disorder to sound inside my ears and when trying to improve and heal up from my H and I really believe that was one thing that really got me through it.
But wish I had his products back then because I believe they are a much better quality product that what I took back then. But live and learn huh.. Then was then now is now.
Also he had Dr Pamela Smith on and her book What You Must Know About Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & More Choosing The Nutrients That Are Right For You and she has a new book coming out and I'm getting that too...
I like Dr Mercola alot though..
I support all those kind of doctors that study up into this field in their practice.
On TV every day Dr Becker starts off with all the new research out there on these natural subtances.
Natures medicine cabinet. In my opinion God's gift to us. Without all those nasty side effects though with any powerful supplements one does need to study up on it too.
To better health and longevity.... ((((( Smiles ))))

Just wanted to add on Magnesium, ((( Smiles )))

I was reading this site on ATP and it said it's required to maintain the primary functions of the body such as moving vital minerals like sodium, calcium and magnesium in and out of the cell. Plus..

I was reading a site Ben posted titled Scientists Solve Mystery Of Ear-Splitting Sounds and it was talking about pain in the ear and a detector of loud sound and something about why loud sounds could be so painful and it talked about ATP.
About a mediator of painful stimula and I have taking ATP for a very long time now in the form of Alph-D- Ribofuranoside. Which is a natural occuring carbohydrate used by every cell in the human body to produce energy, specifically in the production of ATP.
Got to read up more on that later.
Interesting just wanted to share that but I take that as well besides the magnesium. But two afferents got to read up on that..
Study of pain... Plus A traumatized muscle will cause a muscle spasm to protect itself... Plus about ATP...

Hi Laura,

Glad to meet you.  I was born with hyperacusis, but only received a formal diagnosis in July 2009.  I don't have tinnitus, (thank goodness).

I have used an expensive, reputable calcium/magnesium vit D supplement since the 1980's.  I attribute this to my NOT developing several conditions which are common in my family.  It sounds like you have also had good success with a magnesium supplement.

I completely understood when you mentioned:  "
In any case, my life has been on many occasions completely run by this phenomenon. I have just burned my nerves out and left gatherings or movies, or events early, or just had to turn all background noise off or I couldn't hear what people were saying in front of me. I felt I had no way of tuning noise out."

I have left many a gathering or event, due to sensory overload.  Since I was born with this condition, I have never been able to block out background noise.  I hear everything, from the quietest sound to the loudest sound all mixed together, completely unable to separate out things like someone speaking with me.  I just find it incredibly difficult to carry on a conversation in a large crowd, or in a noisy environment (like some restaurants).

I tried to describe this phenomenon to others using the analogy of bees.  Imagine if you lived with bees all around your body.  When at home in a quiet environment, they are asleep and quiet.  But the moment you walk out your front door, they wake up, and begin to buzz.  It is annoying at first, but not painful.  As the day progresses, and you are exposed to more and more noise, light, busyness, the bees get angry and start stinging.  Pretty soon you have an entire hive of bees stinging non stop.  This is when I have to leave and get away from all the sensory stimuli.  Many a time I have retreated to my car alone, or a bathroom stall to cry.  My only reprieve from the "bees" is my quiet home.

I don't feel an actual stinging sensation, but the effect is similar.  I am overwhelmed and in real pain from the sheer exhaustion of "battling" all of the constant noise, and people.

In my 40's I found out that I had been diagnosed with "borderline autism" when I was 2 years old, what we now call Aspergers Syndrome.  I received no treatment, and my mother was told to "ignore it, she will outgrow it".  Well I didn't outgrow it, and for decades lived with constant frustration as I tried to assimilate into "normal"society.  I have also received various diagnosis's through the years, that were incorrect, and once I began accommodating for  the sensory sensitivities of those on the Autistic Spectrum, the other symptoms disappeared.

I have found many things that act as a nutritional support to the central nervous system.  I studied human physiology and vitamin, mineral supplementation in the 1980's.  Since then I have developed a specialized protocol for myself, that has reduced the nervous system vulnerabilities from my genetic lineage.  Magnesium (with twice as much calcium) and Vit D have been tried and true in my arsenal of supplements.

Well I hope you can find some useful ideas here at this forum, and some understanding along with empathy.

Best regards,

Sharon
