Hello everyone,

I'm so happy to have found this network of people. I have been suffering from hyperacusis for a long time (not diagnosed yet, since I have no health insurance), and honestly felt like I was just going crazy.

I'm hoping to get some advice on sleeping.

I live in a large apartment building, 15 stories, many apartments. The A/C units of all my neighbors (I don't use A/C) have the same intensity of a jet taking off, in my ears. This is especially troublesome at night, when I'm trying to fall asleep. It has gotten so bad that I've resorted to sleeping in my closet, since it's the spot furthest away from my window / noise-range of my neighbors' A/C units.

I've tried wrapping my head with scarves, hats, cotton in the ears, but this doesn't dull the noise at all, and actually makes the pain worse.

Has anyone out there in the network experienced similar situations, and found a solution? I'd love to know!

Ear plugs. If you do a search on this site there are a number of resource options available.  These have helped me tremendously.

I have noise cancelling headphones that help. I know how you feel though, the AC noise is hard to mask.

the only problem with earplugs is it does increase your sensitivity. I would get a little sound machine that you have next to you in the bed. I bought mine at CVS and you can turn it to various sounds, I love the classical ones, the kind of non lyrical music that they play at massage therapy sessions, very soothing. If it's really bad, an occasional use of earplugs should not harm you. Totally understand about the communal noise and I think there were times I wish I could just go into a closet too. You do have to do what you have to do. If you can tolerate natural things like valerian, melatonin etc. that may help, sometimes you have to use a combo of a couple of them but please know that everything has interactions and side effects. Air conditioners can be very annoying and clanky, especially in hotels. One time on a trip, we had a room right by the swimming pool and the children screaming high pitched drove me crazy. I turned on the air conditioner to our room and didn't hear a thing. Does your air conditioner bother you, is there a setting you can go on low. How about a fan in your apartment, a lot of folks use that to cover the other noises.

I know exactly how you are feeling. I have tinnitus and hyperacusis and for twenty-two years we were living in Hong Kong. We always lived in blocks of flats and thank goodness we now have moved to France. In HK our flat was on the top floor of 12 floors. Each level had three flats, 15 air conditioners per floor mounted on the walls. So 15 x 12 aircons reverberating every night. I now can't stand them and have developed a phobia for them since l got Hyperacusis. Oh, also the lift shaft machinery was on the roof and the turbine room for the water tank system was above our dining room. I couldn't sleep at all other than for short periods in the summer months when they were all on. Our neighbour ran the aircons all year as he liked to live in 18 degrees C. and never serviced them or ckeaned the filters. The only way l could keep my sanity was ear plugs every night, until my ears became so sensitive to the materials the ear plugs were made of and caused face pain and itching. I then had to resort to sleeping pills, nothing masked the noise. I thank every minute of every day l am away from air conditioners, l would never go back to live in any country where l had to live in that nightmare of noise, and if l get too hot here in France then l use a fan and earplugs.

I purchased from Dan Malcore's website a copy of "Pink Noise". i put it on my cell phone and I put it on repeat and I listen to it at night. I use the "pink noise" as background music during the day. If your cell phone has a tendency to get hot, it is best not to use this device.

I have worked with a woman, Sandi Randomski, who does Energy Psychology. I asked her to do a recording for Sleep. It is awesome. I copied it on my cell phone and I listen to it when needed as I go to sleep. If you sign up for her website, askandreceive.org sometimes they have special discunts on these teleclearings.

Yes read my "a little tip that may help" thread. My neighbors Rusty giant antique central air conditioner located right outside my window he kept running all summer long, and Florida summers are very long, made life difficult. The tip I gave in that thread helped me cope.
 Oh and melatonin, 5 to 10 mg. It's good for you and is known to help with ringing in the ears, besides making you drowsy. For me it's effects last a little longer than a nights sleep so I take it well before bedtime.

I just want to share with you that I saw an expert in sleep disorders at one time in my life (before H) and the advice I got for taking melatonin is .3 (point three) mg about 2 hours before you want to get sleepy, along with keeping your lights low in the evenings as much as possible. This doc said that people tend to think taking more melatonin is better, but that in fact that is not the case. For me this dose worked. Most people I have talked to are unaware of the fact that the "official" dose is that low. You may have had a different experience and I am not discounting that, just sharing what I learned.

 I was wrong to say 5 to 10 mg because I know that a lower dose can help. Sometimes I do take just 3 mg though usually I take 6 and quite often 0 . I don't know as much about melatonin as a doctor. I know it's a hormone that your body makes less and less of each passing year. I do not understand how it gives you a sense of "it's nighttime it's time to sleep"and  makes you drowsy. So it's not a drug and you can't get addicted to it and I've never heard of a melatonin overdose. It is an antioxidant . It helps alleviate free radicals in your body. In other words it's good for you. I just don't know about the one-size-fits-all mentality. I think a person's body size and age would be big factors in determining dosage but I really don't know I'm not a doctor.
