Does anyone have trouble with earbuds at low level volumes? I find myself using them with no irritation at low volumes and other times I can't handle them at low volumes for more than a few seconds. I do my Pink Noise through headphones, however I was just wondering for anyone who's hyperacusis got better if you were able to use earbuds without problems. They're not my listening medium of choice, but they are nice when I go to the gym or when I'm studying at school. I feel like a large part of it is in my head because I'm scared of making my H worse or losing my progress, however some days I do think they irritate me. I am willing to suspect it's because they project sound directly into the ear canal. I was listening to loud music through earbuds when I developed H.

Whats up Adam, I read your 5 month progress story and I was just curious that if over the whole course of you doing pink noise treatment were you using earbuds? I myself have acquired the pink noise from the hyperacusis network and have been using it along with the standard iphone earbuds for about a week(keep in mind i can easily hear background noises and people talking). I noticed that my ears feel a little more sensitive and im not sure if it is from the earbuds. While im listening to the pink noise it does not bother me at all. I have my volume very low, about 15-20%. I know most people reccomend open ear headphones so I have ordered a pair off of amazon. I too would like to know if earbuds are okay to use?

Hey there,

For the Pink Noise treatment I used regular over ear headphones, I tried using earbuds with the pink noise in the beginning but I found it too irritating to my ears. I honestly find earbuds almost always irritating at this point. I'm hoping as I get better they won't be as bad for now I usually avoid them. I was wondering if they got less irritating for anyone that recovered from H.

Do ear buds irritate you while your listening or after? Cause having them in doesn't bother me...its the flare that comes after doing an hour of therapy.

Sadears unless I am wrong I still do not see any record of you ever purchasing the pink noise CD from the network.  Your inquiries about earbuds and over the ear headphones are specifically addressed in the guideline that comes with the pink noise CD.  Don't use over the ear headphones.  I understand you are young and money is tight.  Ideally you should see a qualified clinician who specializes in diagnosing and treating hyperacusis.  If money is the issue then consider the pink noise CD from the network that comes with a six page guideline.

Dan,

I purchased the Pink Noise CD through Paypal, my email is AdamGrimm27@yahoo.com. I have the Pink Noise CD right here in my room with the instruction pamphlet [smile]

I apologize for the mistake, I meant regular next-to-ear headphones, not over ear. Here are pictures for example (I hope I've been doing it right!)

What I use, this pair is a bit more fancy than the one I own

I do not use these

Hope that clears up some confusion.

The guideline specifically states that you should not be using earphones that cup the ear.  You need to be able to hear all the sounds in your environment while doing sound therapy.  To that point, open air headphones should be used.  In fact, in the guideline you received I displayed an image of open air headphones much like these:
