I tested my hypothesis that earplugs during a 6.5 hr road trip might help cut down on the increased ringing. (I was hearing car horns by the time we arrived over thanksgiving!) So the Christmas drive I used the white foam ear plugs from local pharmacy store, light insertion first, then firmer as trip wore on. Fortunately my husband is Deaf so we use sign language to communicate anyways. Well, trying both ways, NO CAR HORNS! Yay! Still ringing but it wasn't exacerbated. ( Still increased burning pain though, which is interesting and supports that they are different systems) Just thought I'd share something that helped me. And happy New year!

I am glad that worked for you.

I want to caution you about using plugs in the car too much.  A few years ago, I started wearing ear plugs in the car because of horns in other cars.  Eventually, I got so the noise from the engine itself started making my ears hurt, which was not the case previously!  Stupid but true.  I still haven't totally weaned myself off them for driving yet, I think it will take a while.

For this reason I would strongly suggest not wearing ear plugs while driving in the car regularly.  Maybe for long trips or something.  If you don't expose yourself to road noises you absolutely can be sensitized to it.

I do wear ear muffs in parking lots because of car horns; it is only a few minutes at a time, and it is very helpful.

I think I didn't explain myself. I wasn't actually hearing car horns. The tinnitus took on "continual car horn sound". I wouldn't drive with earplugs, just passenger. And yes I know abt the earplug paradox. Just thought to share something that provided relief for me in specific situation. Maybe help others.
