Chicago Metro Chapter of NAA to sponsor lecture on March 6th

On Tuesday, March 6th the Chicago Metro Chapter of the National Autism Association will sponsor a lecture by David Ayoub, MD titled, "Vaccines and Autism: Urban Legend or Public Health Fiasco?" Dr. Ayoub will present evidence supporting a link between the mercury-based vaccine preservative Thimerosal and the epidemic of autism spectrum disorders which now affects one in 150 American children. He will critically review published papers that refute such an association. Included in his presentation will be newly released data from a large epidemiological study showing a recent decline in the rates of Pervasive Developmental Disorders in Montreal.

Dr. Ayoub is a board- certified radiologist and volunteer associate professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. He serves as Medical Director of the Foundation for Autism Information and Research. He is Founder of the Prairie Collaborative, Inc, an Illinois not-for-profit organization dealing with vaccine safety issues in Illinois. He has lectured at numerous autism conferences and testified in legislative hearings in several states. He is currently conducting several research projects in a variety of aspects of the vaccines-autism hypothesis. He is coauthor of “Influenza Vaccine in Pregnancy; Critical assessment of the Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices”, published in the American Journal of Physicians and Surgeons, summer 2006.

There is no charge for this event, which will be held at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 2nd floor (Hendrickson Room) at 7:00 p.m. on March 6th. For further information about this presentation or the Chicago Metro Chapter of the National Autism Association, please contact Karen McDonough at naa-chicago@sbcglobal.net.

Canadian-led research identifies genetic regions linked to autism

Provided by: Canadian Press
Written by: SHERYL UBELACKER
Feb. 18, 2007

TORONTO (CP) - In the genetic equivalent of looking for a needle in a haystack, a Canadian-led international research team has pinpointed a new region of DNA thought to cause at least some cases of autism in children.

Researchers at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children and the Offord Centre for Child Studies in Hamilton teamed with scientists and clinicians from centres elsewhere in Canada and eight other countries to scan the entire human genome for autism-related genes.

The consortium of scientists - 137 from 50 centres worldwide that make up the Autism Genome Project - analyzed DNA from about 1,600 families with autistic children to try to zero in on a specific group of brain cells and the genes that affect their development and function.

Their analysis led them in part to a region on chromosome 11, as well as to a gene known as neurexin 1, part of a family of genes believed to be important in communication between neurons, particularly during the brain's development.

The findings, part of the largest genome scan ever conducted in autism research, were published online Sunday in the journal Nature Genetics.

Children with autism have difficulty interacting and communicating with others - including family members. They often exhibit repetitive behaviours such as rocking back and forth, flapping their hands or hitting themselves. The complex disorder affects about one in 165 children, making it the most common form of childhood neurological disorder or developmental disability.

"We first used genome-scanning technology to test genetic markers in autistic children and find regions in the genome linking to autism susceptibility genes," said study co-author Dr. Stephen Scherer, a senior scientist in genetics at Sick Kids.

Scherer was the co-discoverer with an American scientist of common genetic variants in the worldwide general population. What they found, in essence, is that a person's DNA does not contain just two sets of genes, one from each parent, but also on occasion multiple copies of one or more genes and some that are missing altogether.

They dubbed these extra or missing parts of the genome "copy number variations," or CNVs.

It was CNVs that the scientists working on the Autism Genome Project were looking for in their DNA scans of individuals affected by autism.

"What we found was a little bit surprising," Scherer said in an interview, noting that previous, smaller studies by other researchers had zeroed in on different parts of the genome, including regions on chromosomes 2, 7 and 17.

"We didn't find any of those regions," he said of the genetic analysis, which alone took about a year of scientific slogging to complete. "We did not find (anything in) those regions, but we found a region on chromosome 11, which was quite exciting."

What's important about the discovery, said Scherer, is that it has given scientists in the field a new foundation for further research, which eventually could lead them to specific mutations on specific genes that cause - likely in combination - the spectrum of disorders that fall under the autism umbrella.

"We have a good understanding of what the architecture of the genome looks like in autistic individuals now," he said. "We didn't have that before."

Co-author Dr. Peter Szatmari, director of the Offord Centre for Child Studies, said the discovery has huge implications for autistic patients and their families in the future.

"Not only have we found which haystack the needle is in, we now know where in the haystack that needle is located," said Szatmari, who is also head of child psychiatry at McMaster University. (The human genome is made up of about 30,000 genes, each containing 100,000 "letters," or chemical base-pairs called nucleotides.)

"This is a major breakthrough in our efforts to better understand the disorder and improve diagnosis and treatment for patients and their families," he said.

Scherer said the study shows that certain classes of genes likely contribute to the development of autism, "so we have a better understanding of what we need to do to correct it. It's enlightened us on what the causes are."

"We still don't have a definite answer, but we're one step along the way."

Dr. Robert Hegele, a professor of medicine and biochemistry at the University of Western Ontario who was not involved in the study, said the research suggests there are many different forms of genetic susceptibility in autism.

Isolating those areas could one day allow for a test that would confirm the autism diagnosis in children exhibiting symptoms and tell family members whether they, too, carry the combination of genetic defects that could be passed on to their children.

"So maybe you'd be testing for 30 or 40 different genetic susceptibilities at the same time as opposed to a single gene," Hegele, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Human Genetics at UWO, said from London, Ont.

"It's a major step, it's a significant increment in knowledge and understanding of the architecture of these traits at the genetic level," he said of the study.

"The implications would go beyond autism to other complex diseases that are common and have a similar impact, like heart disease and diabetes, and so on."

Below is the study I believe Dr Ayoub is referring to in his upcoming Chicago lecture in March

Mercury in vaccines not cause of autism, study finds

Canadian Press

Published: Tuesday, June 20, 2006

MONTREAL - A new Quebec study casts doubt on the popular theory that mercury poisoning from childhood vaccinations can cause autism.

The theory has prevailed despite several previous studies around the world that have failed to find any connection between autism and common childhood vaccines containing mercury.

But the unique Quebec study, which is to be published next month in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, could have a big impact on the debate.

Quebec changed its vaccine formula 10 years ago, Eric Fombonne, chief of pediatric psychiatry at the McGill University Health Centre, told the 10th International Child Neurology Congress being held in Montreal.

Since 1996, Quebec children have received vaccines without the mercury-based preservative thimerosol, Fombonne said.

He compared autism rates among kids before the vaccine changed and after.

"My study is very clear in showing that there's no relationship between the level of exposure to thimerosol in vaccine and autism," Fombonne said in an interview.

"In fact, in my study the incidence of (autism) is higher in the years when there was no mercury."

Some desperate parents, convinced that mercury poisoning is responsible for their child's condition, have turned to chelation therapy, an unproven treatment that purports to remove heavy metals from the body, in the hopes that it will cure the neurological and developmental disorder.

At least one child has died because of the process, Fombonne said.

"Now these methods are making inroads into Canada," he said.

An anti-vaccine hysteria gripped British parents after an infamous study purportedly linked the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine with autism.

The 1998 study has since been discredited, but in the meantime many parents refused to inoculate their children, leading to a resurgence of infectious diseases such as measles.

Autism is a disorder that impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with others.

Fombonne's department sees about 350 new cases every year, but there's no "autism epidemic," he said.

The definition of autism has broadened to include more children with a wide range of difficulties.

An estimated 200,000 Canadians are living with the disorder, a prevalence of about 65 for every 10,000 people.

"What we need is treatment and services and support for people, and right across their lifespan," said Louise Fleming, executive director of Autism Society Canada.

Thank You Dp, ((( Smiles )))

I had to go back and read above..
I hadn't read it all of yet.. I haven't been to the autism sites of recently..
To see what their talking about.. This is just news updates for whats
going on in the world of thoses pushing for an answer and keeping
others who do research on this subject on their toes so to speak..

Just whats going on and thats probably the study being talked about
by David Ayoub, MD .. Speaking out does not make one popular..
But there are MD's as well as researchers that do just that..

I know on the autism boards before they have talked about who funds certain studies and the connection of funding.. and to what and who..
And how the studies where conducted in detail...

They really keep tabs on thoses things as the issue is really important in the autism community as well as to thoses that have ADHD and other related like disorders who feel the same way as well..

I know in California.. We keep really good records out here better then
anywhere else because we have a network out here of regional centers..
As well as a bigger population of children too..
You probably have read about how California is ahead in providing help
to the disabled through regional centers.. And so the records out here
are of long standing and more complete.. Thats just California for ya..

Up on Energy, Autism just.. Thats how we are out here..
But the records show out here a recent decline and I've posted the
articule somewhere on the board awhile back on that..

You could probably find that on the web too..

But you know out here how the California Gov.. Arnold...
Which is a Republican has been very vocal for along time..
on his feelings of banning the mercury in shots for childrens vaccinations.. For good reasons I'm sure..

And it was awhile back for that in California as well and hince the noted decline in Autism..
You'll find that on the web I'm sure.. It's been in the newspapers..
And we keep good records out here..
They did a recent report on research study on autism in the local paper..
And they included every state " but California " in it..
I thought that was odd.. If I find that articule...
I'll print it out.. It's a wild wild world we live in..

But I had the measles , the chicken pox ect..
All that as a child.. Most children did get it back then..
And I do have family members that had opted out of the vaccinations..
And there child did O.K..
Long ago.. My mother told me not to do it..
But you know.. I believed the peditrician back then...
Didn't know what the shots contained back then...
But interesting what some others in reports say thats not helpfull..
But what the parents has found helpfull for them..
There is a disconnect there.. For sure...

But it's interesting how they can remove the mercury if that want too..
And how that's been called for in places around the world..
As in the USA..
Such as I have read on the web..

But it's true that where there is a high mercury count in the environment.

They did some studys on that.. one in a town in Texas and found a high incident of children with autism..
I posted that long time ago somewhere but you can find thoses studies..
on the web but my local newspaper
is really good in publishing thoses kinds of things...

Hinch.. Now their looking into environmental factors of where children
live........ Mercury is never good to have in ones body..
It is safer and less of a hot potato to blame the environment..
Then a product...
Interesting indeed.........(((( Smiles ))))

Thank you for providing that articule Dp..
I think I read about that 1996 study  and why they called it flawed..
Long ago.. It's so hard to keep up with it all..
So much going on in the world theses days... (((( Smiles )))

Flaws in the Denmark study..

http://www.vaccineinfo.net/immunization/injury/autism/DanishMMRAutismStudy.shtml

http://www.ont-autism.uoguelph.ca/MMR-comments-nov02.html
Plus...
Interestingly, many of the treatments currently deployed in Mt disease (i.e., coenzyme Q10, vitamin B-12, lipoic acid, biotin, dietary changes, etc.) are part of the alternative treatment regimen that many parents use on their children with ASD.

Oh Plus, (((( Smiles ))))

And I remember when I was a child and growing up and through school age.

I don't remember seeing any autistic like children around the neighborhood..

And in school...

And It's not like they are easy to miss either when they start going to school..

I'm sure you read of what the symptoms of autism are..

It's a devestating disorder..

Not just PDD.. Not Just Aspergers.. Not just ADD. OR ADHD..

Though that can be noticable as well..

I'm talking about classic autism..

You just can't miss that and now you see it alot..

1 out of 150.. It has skyrocketed in numbers in the last 20 years..

It's the fastest growing developmental disorder disability in the world today...

Yes.. There is a big problem going on.. Thats for sure...

And the school's are feeling it as well..

They see the difference...

Have you ever talked to a truely autistic child..

Tryed to hold a conversation and thats with the ones that do talk..

It very hard to miss it.. Lots of people just don't know what classic autism

looks like.. The parents know.. So does the school districts..

My one daughter is in the 5 to 10 percent of autism..

That does talk.. And is higher functioning..

Yet.. After talking with her for awhile..

People on the street and in stores ask me if she is autistic..

They notice the difference..

My other one who is more severe..

Is more common theses days..

And you can't not notice her..

Everybody turns her way...

Thats how it is................  (((( Smiles ))))

But in the local paper they did an indept research on mercury

and what it does in the brain in detail...

They explained the whole process in research with pictures..

In detail of exactly.. What it does and destroy's in the brain..

Kind of like the research they did in Canada in Calgory I think it was..

I have the articule somewhere it was very devestating to me..

Thoses things hit home very hard..

I know I printed out the link to that newpaper articule somewhere

on a old thread.. See thats why.. There are so people theses days

that.. See it the other way.............  (((( Smiles ))))

Like that report said you provided...

Quote:

Autism is a disorder that impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with others...

It's not easy to miss autism.....Especially in big numbers..

The schools know what it's all about...

Yes... When it comes to the diagnosis of autism..
not just the total width of spectrum of what alot of other's do now..
consider on the way up to autism...
From PDD unspecifed and downward...

It's usually very noticable by then.. Classic Autism..

If the symptoms are mild, a child might be diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Moderate symptoms might result in a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome. If severe, the diagnosis would be PDD or autism.
These diagnoses make up what is known as the autism spectrum of disorders.

The autism spectrum includes many labels: attention deficit disorder (ADD and ADHD), Angelman's, Asperger's, dyslexia, hyperlexia, Klinefelter's, Landau-Kleffner, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), PDD, Rett's, Tourette's, and autism. Children on the autism spectrum have an important commonality: a huge "total load."

Total load theory describes the cumulative effect of the individual assaults of each problem on the body as a whole.

In California, fewer children with full-blown autism entered the system in 2003 than in 2002. Most of these kids would have been born in 1999 or 2000, when more mercury-free vaccines began their gradual penetration of the market. In 2004, there was another decline, this time among kids born largely in 2000 or 2001, when total average mercury burden from vaccines presumably would have been reduced further. This year, we are seeing kids born mostly in 2001 and 2002, when mercury levels declined further still.

We now know that 2002 was the peak year for new autism diagnoses in the state, with 3,259 cases. That number fell to 3,125 in 2003, and dropped to 3,074 in 2004. For the first half of 2005, there were 1,470 new cases, compared to 1,518 in the same period in 2004. A similar downward tick has been reported in Indiana, and other states should begin weighing in soon.

The Golden State, however, is said to operate the gold standard of autism epidemiology, having always tracked “full-blown” autism only, as defined by the DSM-IV manual. In other words, children with milder forms of the disorder, such as PDD and Apserger Syndrome, need not apply for services. This means that nearly two decades of rising cases in California cannot be attributed to wider diagnostic criteria. The autism epidemic is real.

So why is the drop in numbers such a potential bombshell? Because children entering the system today were born in 2001 and 2002, soon after the mercury-based preservative thimerosal began to be phased out of pediatric vaccines in the United States.

California as I posted above and it was in the local newspapers as well.

Showed a drop in new cases in 2002 marking the first decline in new cases

in children 3-4 years old and newly diagnoised have indeed dropped

since 2002 makeing the first decline in children entering the states disability  system since California began tracking the mysterious condition..

In California we have the State/local based regional center's for autistic children entering the States disablilty system...

We have a system out here and as long as it can stay independent from

the influence of other forces that try to take it over.. Maybe we will see

an even better trend..

But besides this.. There has been studies and we know that children

liveing in areas with a high mercury air count.. Have a higher incident

in autism.. There has been studies on that I think one was done in Texas.

But any study done should be in the future range not the past range..

Not from children born between 1987 - 1998..

Not from the department of pediatric which usely

is the department that trys to push the shots on you..

Usually pediatrics is where get your shots at..

It has to be independent from any study funded by or in way haveing to

do with big pharm or any person or place that may benefit from giveing the shots.

All that is my opinion..  I think it makes sense to me..

Now I read that even when Thirmersol was phased out...

They were still allowed to use stocks on hand not throw it out..

When I read up on it so it wasen't completely out of all vaccinations..

And that lasted untill they used their supplys up..

Plus I read though Thimersol is not added to single dose vaccines..

Yet.. Thimersol is still continued to be used in multidose vaccines

and the flu shot..

After it was phased out on a Canadian health site..

Plus it said we know mercury can damage the brain if enough reaches

the brain cells. But the study does not look at how much thimersol in

vaccines would actually reach the brain..

Thats another study that was done on cells..

See how easy it is...

For me.. It depends on who does the study..

And the details of the study...

Thats just the way I see it....

Newly Released Canadian Data Links Vaccines with Pervasive Developmental Disorder
National Autism Association calls 2006 Pediatrics study fatally flawed

Chicago - New findings presented yesterday at a National Autism Association meeting bolster claims that vaccines may play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorders. David Ayoub, MD presented data suggesting a correlation between mercury-containing vaccines and rates of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), a form of autism, in Montreal. The peak rate of one in 87 children diagnosed with PDD occurred following the period of greatest exposure to the mercury-based vaccine preservative thimerosal. A flattening of the rates studied is now emerging as mercury-containing vaccines have been gradually eliminated from the routine schedule.

This new data points out flaws in a 2006 study published in the journal Pediatrics by Eric Fombonne, MD, et al, which found PDD rates continued to increase even when rates of MMR vaccination and use of mercury-containing vaccines decreased. The study population consisted of a single Montreal school board that was an Autism Center of Excellence, suggesting an over-ascertainment of regional diagnoses. Dr. Ayoub and co-authors Monica Ruscitti, BA, and F. Edward Yazbak, MD broadened the data to include all five Montreal school boards.

The earlier study also reported PDD rates in children from Montreal, but MMR coverage data was taken from Quebec City located 265km from Montreal. The researchers confirmed MMR coverage rates actually increased in Montreal along with PDD, noting a sharper rise in rates after the number of required MMR shots doubled.

The Pediatrics paper claimed there was no exposure to mercury from vaccines post-1996 although several mercury-containing vaccines were administered well beyond 1996. “It’s irresponsible that such flawed data was published in a medical journal. This new information confirms a relationship between vaccines and autism that can’t be explained by better diagnosing or changing diagnostic criteria,” said Karen McDonough, NAA-Chicago president.

Drs. Ayoub and Yazbak detailed the Fombonne study flaws in letters to Pediatrics which the journal declined to publish. Editor Jerold F. Lucey, MD stated in a reply, “I believe the evidence of no link between MMR and Autism is sufficient. It's not worth publishing more on this subject.”

“This dismissal of legitimate concerns regarding data affecting those suffering with autism is a disgrace,” commented Ms. McDonough.

McDonough.

Autism Speaks: Will Anyone Listen?
by David Kirby

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/autism-speaks-will-anyon_b_44414.html

Two years ago, Bob Wright, then president of NBC Universal, and his wife Suzanne founded the blockbuster charity Autism Speaks, (http://www.autismspeaks.com) after their perfectly normal grandson, Christian, developed the disorder and stopped speaking.

The Wrights could easily have kept quiet about it, like so many prominent families do, and hid behind well-funded walls of secrecy and privacy.

But instead, they bravely chose to speak out about a devastating illness that now claims one in 150 American kids -- 80 percent of them boys.

Since then, the Wrights have raised tens of millions of dollars for research, much of it earmarked to find the gene or genes that "cause" autism spectrum disorders.

While no one disputes that autism has a genetic underpinning, there is still a fierce debate over the potential role of environmental influences, particularly mercury, and very particularly, mercury in vaccines.

Many in the upper echelons of Autism Speaks have rejected any environmental hypothesis and insisted that autism is purely a genetic disorder -- though Bob and Suzanne Wright (and the organization itself) remain officially neutral on this crucial question.

But now, Christian is getting better, and that wonderful news could change everything.

Why? Because "genetic" disorders don't typically improve on their own. And little Christian, the child who inspired Autism Speaks, has started to speak again. Will Autism Speaks listen?

On Tuesday Christian's mom, Katie, posted an entry on Yahoo's EOH List (named after my book, "Evidence of Harm" at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/EOHarm) that minced not a word:

"I believe that Christian's regression and subsequent autism was the result of receiving 6 vaccines during 1 office visit at 2 months of age," she wrote. "He screamed for 12 hours and had a 104 degree fever nearly the entire time. His vaccines contained thimerosal," the mercury-based preservative.

"It is devastating," she added, "because so much of this is preventable."

GOVERNMENT / LEGAL / PERSONAL TRACK SAMPLER at the AUTISM ONE 2007 CONFERENCE
May 23-27, Chicago, Illinois
For conference information, please visit:  http://www.autismone.org

AUTISM ONE IS PROUD TO PRESENT NATIONAL LEADERS IN AUTISM.

Lisa Ackerman, Executive Director, Talk About Curing Autism (TACA), presents:

“Starting the Biomedical process - a parent's perspective.”
Starting the biomedical process can be a confusing process - how do you pick a doctor, what tests need to be performed? How to do you pick therapies? How do you gauge results from these efforts? Learn from another parent where to start and the "all important" question of WHY TO CONSIDER BIOMEDICAL interventions for your autism spectrum child. Topics also included in the discussion are: what to look for in a doctor, DAN! doctors versus typical doctors, medical testing, and a basic review of medical treatments. Parents will leave with clear guidelines on where to start the biomedical journey, incorporating treatments with traditional therapies, creating a plan and evaluating each step along the way.

Wendy Fournier, President, the National Autism Association (NAA), presents:

“Raise Your Voice: Politics and the Autism Research Agenda.”
• An overview of the Combating Autism Act. What we can do to secure funding and get meaningful research for our children.
• What is the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee at NIH? A review of the Autism Research Matrix and recommended updates to the committee by NAA and SafeMinds.
• Hey CDC - It's not better diagnosis! Conflicts of interest at the Centers for Disease Control and their refusal to acknowledge the autism epidemic.
• A review of the IOM Workshop on Autism and the Environment proceedings in April 2007.
• Important legislation currently pending in DC and what we can do to help get it passed.

Portia Iversen, co-founder of Cure Autism Now (CAN), presents:

“Profoundly autistic behavior with high verbal intelligence - a new phenotype and a reason for much hope.”
Portia’s son Dov, who is nonverbal and has autism, began to communicate for the first time at the age of nine. In her presentation, Portia will talk about how this occurred, and how it has changed his life and their family’s. She will discuss the communication methods that enabled him to start to communicate, and she will talk about her book "Strange Son" which tells the story of these events. Portia will also touch on some of the research that is being done in this area. Handouts will be available for anyone who is interested in trying these communication methods.

Lyn Redwood, RN, President, the Coalition for SafeMinds, presents:

“Mercury and Autism: Past, Present, and Future.”
In 1999 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that infants who received multiple thimerosal-containing vaccines during their first six months of life were exposed to cumulative levels of mercury in excess of Federal safety guidelines. Shortly thereafter a landmark paper was published creating the hypothesis that the neurodevelopmental disorder autism may represent a novel form of mercury poisoning. This presentation will review landmark events since the FDA announcement with regard to science and policy, including current initiatives advocating for change and close with a look into what the future may hold with regard to the goal of ending mercury induced neurological disorders in children and devising effective treatment strategies for those already affected.

Shelley Hendrix Reynolds, President, Unlocking Autism, presents:

“Bring It On! How to Raise a Child with Autism Fearlessly.”
Your stomach drops the first time you hear "Your child has autism." Suddenly you are cast into a foreign world with a new cadence and a new language. Your family is afraid and so is your child. How do you overcome your fears when they are coming at you from every angle AND FAST - doctor's advice, the medical system, insurance, educational challenges, new therapies you never heard of, and marital and financial strain? You no longer feel safe in your own home because no matter how well you child proof it, your child can find any substance they are not supposed to be in, enter any room, and get out of every door you lock. Shelley will address how to overcome fears in a holistic approach to treating your child's autism so that you and your family can adjust to your new world and you can get on with your life.

Please be sure to stop by the NAA Booth at Autism One!

 Do NOT Take Them Away!

If your child relies on compounded medicines - e.g., methyl B12, pediatric medicines without additives, or special supplements - please read on.

A small but powerful group of United States Senators is ready to force legislation on American consumers that would severely restrict and possibly deny your access to critical medications.

Act today or your access to compounded medicines will be DENIED!

Under this legislation, federal regulators, not your doctor, will decide what medicines you or your child can take.  Do you really want to leave your customized medicine needs in the hands of bureaucrats in the government?

The so-called Safe Drug Compounding Act of 2007 would, among other things:

    •     Broadly eliminate the availability of many critical, commonly compounded medications that many patients rely on, such as bioidentical hormones for women, hospice care treatments for the terminally ill and customized medicines for children.

    •     Allow the federal government to determine when compounded medicines are needed - a decision that has always been and should always be made by doctors.

    •     Restrict the compounded medications your doctor can prescribe even if he or she determines you need them.

If you or someone you know depends on compounded medications, act now to stop this dangerous legislation!

1     Write your elected representatives in Congress.  Use A-CHAMP's easy to use tool to write your members of Congress.   Also, please keep this in mind:  It’s critical that you personalize your letter.  Tell your own story.  Tell them how you rely on compounded medicines and what your life would be like without them.

2     Tell a friend.  Even if your friends and relatives don’t rely on compounded medicines themselves, they still have a loved one - you - who does.  That’s their story to tell.  Please encourage them to tell their representatives in Congress.

3     Tell more friends.  The best weapon we have in this fight is you.  You are the patient.  Yours is the story that your representative in Congress cannot ignore.  The more people we can get to unite in support of compounded medicines, the better our chances of winning will be.

For All of Our Kids – Thanks!

Autism One 2007 Conference, May 23-27, 2007, Chicago, Illinois

Sampler of Tracks and Events
http://www.autismone.org

Another Great Workshop!  “Beginning Grant Writing for Non-Profits”

With the passage of the Combating Autism Act, the introduction of legislation by Senators Clinton and Allard for the Autism Services Bill and the DoD research initiative (see NAA press release at http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/press032107.php ) funds are becoming available. The autism community deserves to participate. First step - learning how to apply.

“Beginning Grant Writing for Non-Profits” will cover the basics of grant writing, particularly the areas that seem overwhelming to beginners.  Specifically, participants will learn the basics of:

  • How to develop logical goals and objectives
  • Determining and describing a needs statement
  • Program development
  • Budgets and evaluation
  • Finding funding sources and meeting their requirements

Workshop presenter Becky Grant-Widen is a public health consultant, focused on grant writing for local and national autism organizations. Becky has 13 years experience in public health non-profits, with a history in tobacco control and community health program development. As the parent of two boys, one of whom is on the autism spectrum, Becky is committed to using her experience to benefit children with autism. She is a Board Member of the National Autism Association (NAA), a Maine District Leader for A-CHAMP, and consultant with Elizabeth Kilpatrick for the Coalition for SafeMinds.

Track 2: Behavior/Education/Communication Therapies --

Megan Carrick MOTR/L and Jennifer McKenna, OTR/L, pediatric occupational therapists, present:

“Sensory Integration: What is it and how can it help your child.”

Each child is unique in how they process sensation.  This session will help you understand how the different sensory systems interact, and what the implications are for your child in daily life.  Understanding your child’s sensory profile will help support development of motor planning, social emotional and fine and gross motor development.

And

“Parent Child Interactions: The Emotional Experience of Daily Life.”

This session will focus on how to use specific interactions to support your child’s regulation, engagement and social emotional functioning.  Learning to understand your child’s sensory profile will help guide your understanding of your child’s emotional experience.

Track 4: Adolescence and Adulthood --

Chantal Sicile-Kira, award-winning author, presents:

“Adolescent Issues: Puberty, Hygiene and Sexuality.”

Adolescence is a difficult time for everyone - neurotypical or not - as a person transitions from being a child to a young adult. To become as independent in adulthood as possible, teenagers of all different ability levels must learn self-care, appropriate behaviors, modesty and sexuality. Areas to be covered include: explaining about puberty and changing bodies, hygiene and self-care and how to problem-solve difficulties in teaching self-care routines, the importance of modesty, and what to do about masturbation. For safety reasons and in preparation for adulthood, all teenagers need to learn about relationship boundaries and sexuality. Ideas for preventing bullying and abuse will be discussed.

Track 5: Government/Legal/Personal Issues --

F. Edward Yazbak, MD, FAAP presents:  “Sand Castles.”

Certain epidemiological studies have been instigated, published and cleverly used to rule out an MMR- or Thimerosal-autism connection. The CDC has funded, helped produce and supported some of them, and editors of medical publications have given them preferential treatment.  The most atrocious result of all of this was the 2004 IOM “verdict” that MMR vaccination and Thimerosal in pediatric vaccines were not, in any way, responsible for the present epidemic of regressive autism, and that any further related research was not warranted.  Biased epidemiological studies ruling out the connection, including a recent one from Canada, are still being published and protected from justified criticism.  Dr. Yazbak will show how, like sand castles, all these studies will eventually be washed away by the tide ...and truth.

Autism Groups Call on Congress to Protect Treatment Options for Children with Autism

Groups Oppose Draft Legislation Giving FDA Broad Authority
to Restrict Access to Compounded Medicines

WASHINGTON – A coalition of autism organizations today expressed concerns regarding draft legislation that would restrict or eliminate access to compounded medicines doctors prescribe to treat children with autism. The organizations – A-CHAMP, Autism One, the Autism Research Institute, Defeat Autism Now!, Generation Rescue, Moms Against Mercury, the National Autism Association, NoMercury, REAACH, SafeMinds, SOAR Autism Network, TACA – Talk About Curing Autism, US Autism and Asperger Association and Unlocking Autism – issued a position paper outlining their concerns with the so-called Safe Drug Compounding Act of 2007. The organizations’ position statement can be found at http://www.nationalautismassociation.org.

“As a mother and advocate for children with Autism, I am committed to ensuring our children have access to safe and effective treatments,” said Wendy Fournier, president of the National Autism Association. “This legislation would have unintended consequences that would severely limit or completely deny access to the custom compounded medications that so many children rely on.”

The organizations’ concerns with the legislation center on the expanded authority it would give the Food and Drug Administration, which would restrict the availability of many commonly compounded medicines, some of which are prescribed to treat children with autism.

“Giving the FDA this kind of broad, unchecked authority is bad for patients,” said Robert J. Krakow, president of A-CHAMP. “The FDA’s current track record on food and safety overall is deplorable. Its track record on protecting children with autism is even worse. The FDA needs to do a better job protecting patients and consumers under existing authority before it can be trusted to take on more.”

"We have an absolute epidemic of autism in this country,” said Representative Dan Burton (R-Indiana). “Parents and doctors are struggling to find appropriate treatments options; and I personally believe that Congress has a responsibility to make sure that children with autism and their families receive the help that they need. Any legislation that unnecessarily limits medical treatment options is, in my opinion, deeply troubling, and potentially dangerous and should be opposed."

The groups will hold a conference call for reporters on Tuesday, May 1 at 11:00 AM EST. To participate, dial 800-351-4895, passcode: Autism.

For more information, visit http://www.nationalautismassociation.org.

NATIONAL AUTISM ASSOCIATION’S ‘ROAD TO RECOVERY’ WALK RAISES THOUSANDS IN BOSTON

PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS HELP BOOST FUNDS FOR RESEARCH AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR FAMILIES

Boston, MA – On Sunday, parents, children with autism, caregivers and friends shrugged off the wind and chilly temperatures in Boston to attend the ‘Road to Recovery Walk,’ a fundraiser to benefit programs through the National Autism Association (NAA).

The event was successful in raising awareness and $25,000 for autism research funds and NAA’s Helping Hand Program, which provides financial aid for autism families in need.

Jean Whelan, local parent of a child with autism, was the lead coordinator of the event. “Like last year, it was a great turnout with so many folks committed to helping end the autism epidemic,” says Whelan. “We’re so grateful to all that attended the walk, and raised money for these important programs.”

NAA has been an active leader in the fight to uncover the effects of ethylmercury thimerosal, a preservative routinely used in vaccines and other health-related consumer products. The group is also the only national organization to offer the largest direct financial assistance program in the autism community.

“Parents like Jean, and so many others, make it possible for NAA to continue our research and aid. The funds raised are needed for crucial studies and programs geared towards providing relief for the now 1 in 150 diagnosed with autism,” says Wendy Fournier of NAA.

The National Autism Association is a nonprofit, parent-run organization

The National Autism Association is honored to announce the addition of Deirdre Imus to the NAA Board of Directors.  Ms. Imus, a national leader in children’s health and environmental issues, is the founder and president of the Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology, part of Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) in New Jersey, a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation.  The Center represents one of the first hospital-based programs whose specific mission is to identify, control, and ultimately prevent exposures to environmental factors that may cause adult, and especially pediatric cancer, as well as other health problems with our children.

The Environmental Center developed the award-winning Greening the Cleaning® program. Greening the Cleaning® means eliminating to the greatest extent possible all cleaning agents containing hazardous ingredients and replacing them with environmentally responsible ingredients with the least level of toxicity. 100% of all profits go to the Environmental Center for education and research.

Deirdre is also co-founder and co-director with husband, Don Imus, of The Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer, a 501(C) (3) not-for-profit authentic 4,000 acre working cattle ranch in northern New Mexico, which provides the experience of the American cowboy to children suffering from cancer and various blood diseases, as well as to children who have lost a brother or sister to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Numerous organizations have recognized Ms. Imus’ impact. In May 2007, the National Audubon Society will honor Mrs. Imus with the Rachel Carson Award for Women in Conservation.  She was recently honored with the prestigious Lizette H. Sarnoff Award for Volunteer Service by the National Women’s Division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. In 2005, she was honored with the Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award by the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.  In addition to her work to identify and prevent toxic environmental exposures that may cause adult and pediatric cancer, Deirdre is a leading advocate for children affected by autism.  Her efforts have been instrumental in broadening public knowledge of the link between toxic exposures to the development of autism spectrum disorders.

The author of numerous articles and the best-selling book, The Imus Ranch: Cooking for Kids and Cowboys Deirdre’s latest book is a New York Times Bestseller, Green This! Volume 1: Greening Your Cleaning, offering a wealth of insights and expertise for protecting families from harmful chemicals.

Everyone with NAA welcomes Deirdre to our board of directors and looks forward to working with her as we continue our advocacy on the critical issues facing children and families affected by autism.

Attention Autism Researchers

Please review the following message to NAA from the Department of Defense on research opportunities through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The DoD CDMRP research funding began 15 years ago when $25 million was awarded to breast cancer research. Today, that number is $127.5 million and CDMRP is the second largest funder of breast cancer research in the world. It's great news for the one in 150 children now diagnosed with autism that the CDMRP is now allocating funding towards Autism Spectrum Disorder research. NAA was invited by the DoD earlier this year to participate with other stakeholders in steering this critical new research initiative, with board member and science committee chair Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN, representing our organization during the ongoing process.
Here is the latest information from the DoD on the CDMRP's autism research program:

New funding opportunities are available for the Autism Spectrum Disorder from the Department of Defense Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program.

The Fiscal Year 2007 (FY07) Defense Appropriations Act provides $7.5 million to the Department of Defense Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program (ASDRP) to promote innovative research that advances the understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and leads to improved treatment outcomes. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Below is a quick reference table, and it is also available: http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/pdf/07asdrpreftable.pdf.  The complete Program Announcements for each award mechanism are located on the CDMRP website: http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/asdrp.htm and summaries are located on http://www.Grants.Gov.

VACCINE-INDUCED AUTISM HEARINGS TO PRESENT SCIENCE SUPPORTING PARENTS’ CLAIMS
Government Lawyers To Rely Upon “Cigarette Science” Says NAA

WASHINGTON, DC – Hearings are scheduled to begin next week in the U.S Federal Claims Court where over 4,800 parents have filed for compensation for their children who developed autism after exposure to infant vaccines.  A majority of those claims revolve around the use of thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative.

Parents claim that the science is on their side and agree with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s opinion that the science against them amounts to “cigarette science” similar to the flimsy claims of the cigarette manufacturers from years ago.

The wealth of science backing a vaccine/autism link will go head-to-head with federal agencies that mandated the administration of mercury-containing vaccines to children and with the drug companies that produced them.  Parents have been especially wary of pharmaceutical/government ties ever since the mysterious insertion of a rider to the Homeland Security Act in 2002 which would have protected Eli Lilly from any liability resulting from their product, thimerosal.

For parents like Lyn Redwood, RN, whose son received 125 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s allowable exposure to mercury at 2 months of age, the science is overwhelmingly supportive of a thimerosal-autism link.  After routine childhood vaccines, Mrs. Redwood’s son slowly regressed and was found to have toxic levels of mercury in his body.  According to Mrs. Redwood, “The only data supporting no evidence of harm are a handful of epidemiology studies conducted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and vaccine manufacturers.”

One such study performed by the CDC’s National Immunization Program was recently reviewed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which concluded that the CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink utilized in the investigation had several serious problems, “judged to reduce the usefulness of an ecologic study design using the VSD to address the potential association between thimerosal and the risk of autism spectrum disorders.”

Published peer-reviewed clinical studies supporting parents’ claims include:

  • the development of blood levels of mercury in children after vaccination that meet the diagnostic criteria for mercury poisoning by the CDC’s own definition
  • vaccine levels of mercury result in significant mercury accumulation in the brain
  • elevated levels of mercury in children diagnosed with autism who are unable to effectively eliminate the neurotoxin following exposure

A three-year investigation by the Government Reform Committee concluded in May of 2003: “Thimerosal used as a preservative in vaccines is likely related to the autism epidemic.  This epidemic in all probability may have been prevented or curtailed had the FDA not been asleep at the switch regarding the lack of safety data regarding injected thimerosal and the sharp rise of infant exposure to this known neurotoxin.   Our public health agencies' failure to act is indicative of institutional malfeasance for self-protection and misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry.”

Vaccine Court Blog Entry from David Kirby on the Huffington Post
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/see-you-in-vaccine-cour_b_51224.html

See You In (Vaccine) Court

On Monday, one of the most important legal proceedings in American medical history will get underway at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington. There, a special panel of three judges will begin hearing evidence to support -- and refute -- the hypothesis that mercury in vaccines and/or the live-virus measles-mumps-rubella shot caused autism or autism-like symptoms in some American children.

Monday will mark the first time ever that evidence of autistic harm from childhood vaccines is examined and cross-examined in a court of law. This is far from a slam dunk case for either side, and the stakes - professional, financial, emotional -- could not be more intense.

These three judges from the federal "Vaccine Court," as it is called, are about to dip into the raging, contradictory waters of the vaccine-autism contretemps, knowing they must emerge on the other side, each with their own acutely anticipated decision about causation. Ultimately, they must deliver judgment on some 4,800 claims that have been languishing in the system for years.

I do not envy them their task.

Technically, at least, this is not a trial at all; it is an "Autism Omnibus Proceeding" in a no-fault, supposedly non-adversarial adjudication. The judges are not judges, but "Special Masters;" plaintiff families and their lawyers are called "petitioners," and the defendant, called the "respondent," is not some drug giant, but the Department of Health and Human Services, represented by well-funded attorneys at the US Justice Department.

Any claims awarded in Vaccine Court are paid from a 75-cents-per-vaccine tax footed by consumers, leaving vaccine makers free from liability.

Please visit http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/see-you-in-vaccine-cour_b_51224.html to read David's post in its entirely and take a moment to leave a comment of your own.

Conflict-of-Interest Reporting Serves to Replace Fact with Fiction in Vaccine Injury Cases
Advocates for vaccine-injured children claim coverage of Autism Hearings heavily influenced by drug industry

Washington, DC - With the Autism Omnibus Proceedings now in the second week of testimony in the US Court of Federal Claims, advocates for vaccine-injured children are calling the bulk of media accounts biased against families.

Often presented as iron-clad in many media accounts, the misinformation parents and advocacy organizations note as appearing most frequently in mainstream news include:

  • the 2004 IOM report suggesting that research involving thimerosal be discontinued, even though the committee considering the research presented disregarded clinical investigation in favor of epidemiology conducted in Europe and funded primarily by drug companies and public health agencies
  • the assertion that the autism rate of one in 150 children is attributable to better diagnosing, while the symptoms associated with autism are profound, and according to parents and professionals alike “can’t be missed”
  • the claim that the mercury-based preservative thimerosal has been removed from all vaccines, although most flu shots and several other vaccines still contain 25 micrograms mercury, an amount considered unsafe by government guidelines for anyone weighing under 550 lbs. (A current list of vaccines and thimerosal content is available at http://www.vaccinesafety.edu/thi-table.htm )
  • that there is no science linking vaccines to autism, even though many peer-reviewed published studies confirm the link between mercury and neurological injuries with symptoms nearly identical to autism spectrum disorders (To view some of the relevant studies, visit http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/library.php )

The use of spokespersons with ties to drug companies in news accounts has also been cited as form of bias.  Dr. Paul Offit has been quoted frequently in defense of the practice of injecting mercury into pregnant women and young children.  Dr. Offit’s work has been funded for over 15 years by pharmaceutical giant Merck, with whom he is co-patent holder of the RotaTeq vaccine.  The FDA announced last week that RotaTeq will now carry a label warning for pediatricians and parents about the vaccine's link to Kawasaki Disease, considered one of the leading causes of acquired heart disease among children in the US.

During the first week of the hearings, an NBC Today show segment featuring former Johnson & Johnson vice president Dr. Nancy Snyderman drew further criticism when Snyderman suggested that parents involved in the autism hearings were motivated by financial gain.  “Apparently, Dr. Snyderman is either completely ignorant of the emotional and financial devastation to families of children suffering from vaccine-related injuries or she’s speaking on behalf of her former employer.  Either way, it’s unacceptable,” commented NAA president and parent Wendy FournierDr. Snyderman's former employment with Johnson & Johnson was not disclosed to viewers.

Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ortho Clinical Diagnostics is involved in litigation for injuries, including autism, associated with its thimerosal-containing Rh immune globulin product, RhoGAM.

NAA Board Member Deirdre Imus on The Huffington Post

Greening Your Thinking: Setting Priorities

If there's one thing that both parties can agree on, protecting our children should be one of our nation's, and our next president's, highest priorities. Republicans, Democrats and Independents all want the best for America's children. But children need to be protected from more than terrorist attacks, neglect, abuse and online predators. Children also need to be protected from environmental toxins that are causing epidemic levels of diseases and disorders and from the elected officials who would "sell out" our children for the conflicting priorities of major corporations.

As seen with the recent major toy recalls, whenever disaster strikes, there's usually a paper trail of warnings predicting the ominous event. Global warming, Bin Laden, Katrina, Vioxx, a collapsed bridge in Minnesota...time and time again we find catastrophes inevitably could have been prevented had our leaders taken the warnings seriously.

Immediately following each disaster, a chorus line of public officials, particularly those running for higher office, rush to express condolences and pledges to investigate the events leading up to the tragedy. Promises, promises...but not much comfort to the victims of the warnings ignored.

There's no question the Iraq war, homeland security and immigration are important issues that need to be discussed and debated. But far too often competing priorities become the convenient excuse for nothing more than complacency on other issues that are also important to voters.

The World Health Organization states over 80 percent of major diseases are significantly affected by environmental exposures. This means many diseases could be prevented.

Like other catastrophes, warnings about environmental toxins are well documented: agencies know, health officials know, and the presidential candidates know.

Unfortunately, protecting our children from environmental exposures often conflicts with the interests of major corporations employing legions of lobbyists who treat Capitol Hill like their personal playground. To the detriment of our children, industry influence has corrupted our political system. The most powerful is the pharmaceutical industry, which employees over 1,200 lobbyists, more than two for every member of Congress, and has spent more than 1 billion dollars over the last decade on Congressional lobbying activities.

Now maybe children's health is not a priority for some people, certainly not the media asking all the same questions over and over again, but in a recent poll 72 percent of all likely voters agreed,"our political leaders are not doing enough to ensure the health, education and well-being of children today." When asked if "the president and Congress need to give a higher priority on our country's children and spend less time on other issues," 76 percent of voters agreed. Nearly half thought the well-being of America's children has worsened in the past 10 years.

These voters are absolutely correct...and this might surprise the "suits" managing presidential campaigns...they represent an important and powerful voting block. So what do these "ordinary" people know that the candidates don't seem to "get" or perhaps prefer not to talk about?

A recent Harvard study reported American children are sicker today, with more chronic illnesses, than a generation ago. So while the past, present and future war strategy dominates the political landscape, millions of parents live in constant crisis trying to care for their very sick children.

During the same time as the presidential candidates have been serving as members of Congress, governors, mayors and one as a Secretary of Health and Human Services, the health of millions of America's children has deteriorated.

So how bad is the state of our children's health?

Cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children.

Leukemia and brain cancer have increased 23 percent and 28 percent, respectively since the 1970s.

1 in 6 children is now considered overweight.

1 in 6 children has a learning disability and/or behavior disorder (ADHD).

1 in 6 children lives in poverty.

1 in 150 children has been diagnosed with autism.

1 in 400 - 500 children has diabetes.

Asthma has more than doubled since 1980 and is the leading chronic disease among American children.

Each of these diseases also carries enormous cost to American taxpayers. It's estimated that childhood cancer, asthma, neurodevelopmental disorders and lead poisoning cost our nation $54.9 billion annually.

It doesn't matter if you are Democrat or Republican, liberal, progressive or conservative, low, middle or upper class, the majority of voters are looking for a leader who will make children's health a national priority in actions, not just words.

In every respect, our children are treated like second-class citizens and have been poorly represented. This needs to change.

So let me ask the candidates some questions that you won't hear from the redundant media "talking heads."

On a scale of 1 to 10...#1 being the most important, where do you place the state of our children's health?

For years, science has been telling us that environmental chemicals and toxins are harming our children. What is your plan to reduce environmental exposures?

What do you say to the families who have looked to you for leadership in confronting the rapid rise in children's developmental disorders that many parents believe and multiple studies show, are caused by mercury used in medicine and pushed by government-funded programs? What do you say to these sick children?

What will you do to address the influence of chemical, insurance and pharmaceutical industry on our government? And how much money has been given to your campaign by these industries?

Do you think you've done all you can to protect the health and safety of America's children against environmental toxins?

Memo to the campaign directors: The soccer mom of a decade ago is likely to be the mom of a sick or special needs child today. There are over 7,000 children living with autism in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida. Four key battleground swing states. There are even more children struggling with learning disabilities and asthma. With the last two elections being so tight...where every vote truly counted...garnering the support of this new, motivated special interest group could decide the next election.

I've seen this voting group in action. I wouldn't suggest taking them for granted.
