Does it happen to anybody?Just when you are relaxing and typing away on the computer someone walks in the room and makes a sudden sound(a cough, placing down an object, rustling papers). It makes you jump as if you were stuck with a needle! The sound doesnt necessarily hurt but causes a shock to your senses! My dad has a irritating habit of sniffling and coughing. While I am here visiting he is driving me mad! Do I have a phobia or hatred to soft sounds.I get so angry at the softest sounds that break silence. When I make these sounds myself I dont react with shock.Sniffling, eating sounds, doors clicking etc.I am becoming more annoyed by these everyday! Is this also part of my H/T? The saga continues.

Paul,

When we try to seek out silence., I think we notice anything that disturbs it.
And with these hearing challenges sounds seem louder overall, and if it is relatively quiet - it doesn't take much to make something else seem distracting.

It makes me wonder, if something like some sort of sound enrichment would help?
As to have something playing in the background, that is tolerable- can help alot.

It seems that when there is ambient sound in any situation, the "Hyper ears "will not respond in an "alert response."(my personal experience).Studies I have read also define Hyperacusis as a "reduced tolerance to sudden shifts in sound." In my case, going from complete quietness to an abrupt sound, loud or soft causes the hearing a sort of jolt.It may very well be that the received signal is perceived as much louder and causes a fight or flight response to the brain. My audiologist said that I am phonophobic. Now, I could not agree more. This response I notice more at the days end when all I want to do is rest my ears and control the only sounds that I want to hear! Any outside interference of sound comes off as unwelcomed.
