A long time ago, a man was brought into a dungeon.

In this dungeon, there were two guards and two doors.

One door lead to freedom. The other door lead to certain death.

The man did not knot know which was which (he was brought into the dundgeon while asleep).

Both guards knew where each door lead.

The man was allowed to ask one question and one question only (just a simple question which would elicit a single response). He could ask his question to one or the other guard but not both.

One guard always lied, the other always told the truth. The man did not know which guard was truthfull nor which was not.

What question did the man ask in order to get out of the dungeon safely?

The man turns to either guard and asks the following question:  "If I asked the other guard which door leads to freedom, to which door would he point?"

If he turns to the truth-teller, he learns to which door the liar would point - and the man goes through the other door.

If he turns to the liar, he is pointed to the door the truth-teller would supposedly point to, but since it's a lie, he would go through the other door.

In other words, it does not matter which guard he asks - truth-teller or liar.  Either way he goes through the door to which the guard does not point.

Yes! That is exactly the question that leads to freedom.

Good work SP! And fast too!

sp sure was fast, dp.  We are apparently dealing with a man whose synapses have wings -- or sneakers.

When I saw this test question, the best I could come up with was that the prisoner would turn to one of the guards and ask "Are you a close personal friend of Shecky #9?"  Let me immediately detract fifteen points from my score, in advance of whatever you will detract from it, for such distinguished thinking.

By the way, in case you're wondering why I haven't answered the infamous SAT travel question -- I am, as they say, building suspense.  Or, perhaps, waiting for a bus.

I will say that your answer was almost profanely industrious.

Rob,

I can't wait to see what the answer to 5A and 5B. I tried everything.... I'm out of ideas. Maybe SP can come up with something.

Like the beginner's chef said to the meatball, I think I'm just going to let you stew.

I know, I know.  I am once again detracting twelve dozen points from my burgeoning score so that no one has to do it for me.

It may be time to get out that English-to-Urdu dictionary, buddy.
