Are they the same thing?  Or are they different?  Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Broadband noise generators emit noise which covers a broad band of noise, just like if someone was to drive from New York to California, she would be covering a broad area of the country.  The term "white noise" generators is a little off.  Real white noise - what we hear late at night on our TV when a station goes off the air - would be hard to tolerate especially for folks with hyperacusis who have a decreased sensitivity to sound.  The high-end generators, like those we talk about on this board, do not emit white noise.  They emit something that is a little easier on the ears.  When folks use the term 'white noise generator' they are really talking not about white noise, but about a device that emits broadband noise.

The noises all sound the same to me.  Pink noise, white noise.  It's hard to tell the difference.  When I was a kid and the cable went out, we referred to it as "snow" because there was no picture.  The sound was not too loud for me unless the volume was turned up high.  I think anyone would be bothered by that sound when the volume is turned up.
